SPEED GARAGE -
What is Speed Garage Music? |
"He was standing behind
the decks one time chatting to me and we started talking
about music and the world when he commented on how fast
Dj Hermit was speeding up the music. He then
called it SPEED GARAGE! I'll never forget the moment because
a month or so later he also said it in an interview in
one of the mags. This in turn was quoted all over, and
the label stuck".

So why are they different names for this
form of music? The story of how the 'speed garage'
tag came about as British DJs sped up the pedestrian garage
tracks at a plodding 120-125bpm to a
more pumping and energetic 128-130bpm
is wearing a bit thin nowadays. |
| Today, Speed Garage tracks
are recorded at that tempo to start with, and the phrase
"speed garage" often leads to
cries of "Don't use the 'S' word!"
from the movers and shakers within the scene. The London
Dream Team are the DJ/producer team of Timmi Magic,
DJ Spoony and Mikey B. Spoony has been resident
DJ at "Twice As Nice" in London, widely accepted
as the Mecca of the scene since it opened in August last
year at the Coliseum in Vauxhall. |
| "We don't
use the name "speed garage" - we commonly call
it 'underground' or "underground garage".You
could describe it as "underground fusion" because
it brings in elements of most underground music. It's
a closer cousin to mainstream garage but there's still
elements of jazz, Latin, jungle, reggae, even Techno in
there so it's more of a fusion of styles".

|
| Another unpopular term of the music is
that it is known as "raggage",
which produced sniggers from most of the people I spoke
to.It's clearly someone's idea of describing the marriage
of traditional garage with the deep reggae tinged basslines
- a contribution generally attributed to the wave of ex-jungle
producers who since moved into this scene. |
