The 4x4 night at the cavernous Eros featured Dj EZ, Karl Tuff Enuff Brown back
to back with Matt Jam Lamont for another one off TuffJam reunion. Uk/Garage
lovers would know of course that they were one of the founding fathers of
the UK Garage scene.
The original 4x4 Uk Garage scene ('four to the floor' or old skool
garage) which split amicably around 1999. As the music changed to the slower
soulful 2 step garage. They had their first event on New Years Day 2003 at Romford, England; also the first 4x4 Soulful House rave featuring EZ and Todd.
On this night the warm up DJ was none other than Dj EZ himself!
Now if Dj EZ is the warm-up then you know you will be in for a wicked night.
The main attraction was of course Todd the god Edwards.
Todd Edwards, is probably bigger in the UK than in his native USA.
His sound fitted in with the London scene and influenced the early UK Underground
garage of the mid 1990's,
![]() For instance the Tuff Jams - London, England sound that laid the foundations of UK Garage leant heavily on him. In fact I always thought he was from London, and part of the Tuff Jams set up because his sound was so similar to them. Little did I know that it was the other way round, and that he took the US sound,(*Todd his from New Jersey,Usa)to London,England! Tuff Jam added the London touch to it, i.e the Ragga/Jungle influenced basslines and beats etc. He rightly earns the accolade Todd 'the god' Edwards, and is bigged up as the guest of honour by Matt jam Lamont and Dj Ez on their shows on Kiss 100 fm, whenever he is in town.
![]() They all know the debt UK Garage sound owes to Todd Edwards. Bearing this in mind Todd is a very modest and humble guy who comes across as very down to earth, and just a DJ and fan of the scene. He spent most of the night before his set signing autographs and having his photos taken, when he was at the large DJ box, or whenever he went on a walk about with others around the club. He certainly had no ego of a 'superstar' DJ.
![]() Maybe being a deeply religious man is one reason for his humbleness. A lot of his big tunes have a religious/spiritual message, with 'Jesus' appearing on many of the titles. His big hit was 'Sweet Jesus'.In case clubbers were mesmerised by his unique sound and not the lyrics, you were left in no doubt about his beliefs because he wore a t-shirt with the words 'JESUS LOVES YOU' on the front. He did not come across as a happy clappy non stop preaching 'Jesus freak', because he let the music do the talking. Even on the said Kiss 100 (London, England) radio appearances with EZ or Matt Jam Lamont, he does not use it as a sermon for his religious views. Dj EZ kicked it off, and then the crowd went wild for the Tuff Jam set - i.e Karl tuff enuff and Matt "jam" Lamont. Then they all went wild for Todd Edwards set as it was wicked.
![]() Inside the large dj box at Eros all of the djs that night were rocking and dancing to Todd. The stage in front of the dj box was packed solid with everyone going wild. Todd's soon to be released CD were also given out to the crowd, which led to minor stampedes. Countless personalities within the Uk Garage scene were there in attendance, and bigged up the night on the mike. Personalites such as Ramsey (*from Ramsey and Fen Fame!), CKP, Ranking, Rat pack - all from England etc. The most hilarious part of the night occurred when Buzzhard responded to a request from a woman for Rnb and Ragga (Reggae music), during Todd Edwards set! "Not tonite baby", which brought the house down with laughter! Dj EZ the warm up dj came on again after Todd Edwards at 2.20am and kept the crowd rocking with classic floor fillers. Matt "jam" Lamont, was still there at 2 pm and when we left his show on Kiss 100 Fm between 2am to 4am was on with him there. So it must have been pre recorded it!
![]() What a wicked night! Video cameras were present on the night and notices were up saying it will filmed for future broadcast and those present give their consent for filming etc.
![]() A postscript to the night came on Dj EZ show Kiss FM, Saturday 22 March,2003. Matt Jam Lamont was there along with MJ Cole who was the guest DJ doing a mix. He was asked by Dj EZ what he thought about present state of UK garage which is darker and more MC based.
![]() MJ Cole replied and said that the pendulum has swung that way at the moment and will swing back other ways soon. You have to move with the times and not live in the past but stay in the present. He acknowledged that the soulful sounds of the old skool, 2 Step Garage days won't sell because the kids want to hear the "darker" stuff. However the surprise of the night, and the reason why Matt "jam" Lamont was there, was to play a tape of his interview with Todd Edwards on Wednesday night. Todd Edwards was asked by Matt "Jam" Lamont who he would most like to work with in the UK, and his reply was: MJ Cole! The studio went wild and the combination of their unique styles would cause shockwaves throughout the Uk Garage world. So watch this space for more on this.
