SPEED
GARAGE - What is Speed Garage Music? |
Sunday, Sunday......a
little history!
As Garage got pushed out of the clubs in favour of Hard
house, Jungle, Techno or Drum and Bass music's
it retreated to the underground and evolved. Underparties,
little raves, etc within areas in London's inner city and
pirate radio scene. If you want to be more conclusive than
that you can actually trace its roots back to the South
Coast of England, three years ago when the Dream
Team and Tuff Jam would play events such as "Happy
Days" at the Frog & Night-gown and "Deja Vu"
in such exotic locations as Bournemouth. |
It later moved (according
to Dream Team and Tuff Jam) upto London as the
"Sunday Scene" with events
such as "Spread Love" at the Gas Club,
hosted by Norris "The Boss" Windross and DJ
Dominic Spreadlove as well as nights at Cafe
De Paris and The Park in Kensington. DJ Spoony
has seen it build to the point where he and his Dream
Team partners are now DJing at midweek gigs too.
"The Sunday Scene"
was a small underground scene playing mainstream garage
a little faster but also spinning older stuff - material
which wasn't being played in normal mainstream clubs.
As more and more Sunday clubs catered for these tastes
and allowed more and more people to listen to it, the
scene spilled into Saturdays, Fridays and now midweek
dates such as our Thursday night sessions at The End.
Over the past eighteen months, it's gone far beyond a
literally 'Sunday' scene. The media, however, are suddenly
onto it and they've been the ones giving it the 'Sunday
scene' tag."

|
In addition to their 'Twice
As Nice' nights at the Coliseum, other top garage nights
which were held at the Gas Club in Leicester Square
and The Aquarium (Vauxhall) on Fridays, Cookies &
Cream in Piccadilly, Sun City at Adrenaline Village, Numb
Numbs, Bagleys and The Powerhouse on Saturdays.
It seems as if the whole scene just changed around late
November, early December time of l996 when a whole flood
of pirate radio stations got on board. Another mention
shout should go the "Black underground, music
loving Garage music crowd", who being forced
out of attending some more exclusive Garage clubs throughout
the city of London. Started going to these Underground
"Sunday Scene" parties in their droves.

|
| Fed up with turned away at
the doors for no apparent reason, at some of these clubs.
They ventured onto these parties which seem to fit them
like a glove. The Sun City Underground Speed Garage
event within London at this time, attracted a huge
black following due to this. As well as the now infamous..Twice
as Nice club in, Vauxhall, South London, England |
The biggest Influence
of all... Pirate radio!!!!
London based pirate stations have been very instrumental
in bringing this new breed of garage to a wider audience
and respect is due. The likes of pirate stations such as
the London Underground, Magic FM, Deja Vu, Girls
FM and Freak FM as well as Kiss FM in its time as a pirate. |
