The Sunday Scene. Or shall we call it "Speed Garage"?
It's been impossible to avoid the media circus surrounding the newest sound from UK underground. New phrases such as "Sunday scene" or "Speed garage" were been springing up weekly during the year of 1997 as onlookers attempted to describe this new sound coming of England. It's a scene which has many aspects, owes some of its creation to the deep reggae style basslines of RIP(UK) and Armand Van Helden (USA).

RIP team from London, England

It also owes some allegiance to the full vocal crossover sound of Rosie Gaines, Bobby D'Ambrosio and Tina Moore (USA Vocalists!!);and more recently towards the end of this year (1997) the inclusion of Hiphop break beats within the music. (Check out DJs such as The Pied Piper, Charlie Brown, Jason Kaye, Spoony and the many more!!(London)

The English media may have thought that they had suddenly discovered something which has been developing for a good year and a half already. No-one can deny that it has been very good for this scene in someway.Even if you're not a Garage-head, the scene's new influences will in no doubt have still crept into your DJ record box.

Armand van Helden style of deep basslines and time stretched vocals with his remixes of Tori Amos, Todd Terry and Sneaker Pimps has placed him into the remix superstar bracket already. He has already been quoted in saying that he is now charging a cool £35,000 pounds (English pounds) per remix.

This new phenomenon within Garage is crossing over big time, and many people see it as the kick up the arse everybody was waiting for! Views on exactly what to call the scene and on the diversity of its sub-genres depend entirely on who you speak to.
