Pure Silk, Sw1 Nightclub, London, England - Official Report
Yes, once again I was on the move.
Where to this time? Surely, not London, again.
With a cheeky grin on my face I have to inform you that it was!!!!!! This time I placed in an appearance
at the club called "Pure Silk" at The Raw which
is situated at 112 Great Russell Street, WC1 (off Tottenham Court
Road). However, moves within the clubs structuring has meant that a move of premisses after 3 years
of fun is on the cards. The club in question is the SW1 club, London.
I had heard great news about this club through various
friends that where actually living within the London; or had recently
just come back from there partying. The night in question was
March 8th, 1997. Nothing special. Nothing out of the ordinary.
But our little party had decided that London was calling and we
thought it would be rude not to answer!!
We left Ipswich, at around 12.30pm (late
isn't it) making good stead on the motorway that saw us reach
the capital at about 1.40pm. After visiting a few haunts
in our local Town. Cruising through the streets or London, as
we approached the West End Side of London, we noticed that
most of the clubs has now a heathly size of punters waiting to
be let in via the their doors. As we reached the Piccadily
area, within London. We were greeted by the famous
flashing lights, and kamacarze styled pedestrians that seem
to be willing us to run them over.

Eventually after finding our secret parking spot that
has served us well for 2 years. (Looking out for any policemen on the way!!!)
We made our way to the Raw
Club, in London (112 Great Russell Street, WC1(just of
Tottenham Court Road). The club night in question being "Pure
Silk" which meant House and Garage night!!!
Funny enough on reaching the door we were met with no
irritating crowd queues or, police styled body searches. Maybe
we timed it right or something. I don't know!!!
After paying our respects we were greeted with a club
that you knew would be typically Underground. Sparse decor,
an untidy appearance meant that all the clubs energy was going
to be placed on the music and the vibes. Nothing else!!

However, passing through the room full of Minders,
Bouncers, Security advisers (call them what you will !!!)
I thought that would be that and we were going to be lead into
the main room. How wrong I was!!. From passing through that room
we were confronted by a number of passages that meant we had to
go down a number of flights of stairs to get to the main event
of the evening.
Eventually after it seemed an eternity, we reached the
paying booths, which we parted company with
. Or some of
it!!
Now we were in. As I mentioned before, the venue placed
a low emphasis on having wonderful decor, or flashing lights.
This what was meant by being Underground. As soon as you hit the
place though. The tunes were pumping. I 'm sure the track the
greeted us on a our arrival was "Saved me Life" by
Todd Edwards
.. After hearing that I knew that we were
in for quality night of tunes at least.
The others made for a small room that you had to go into
to get to the large room. This was more dark and dingy than what
we had just left. However, within this room there were a couple
of Black dancers who were doing their impressions
of the Nicholas Brothers or Gene Kelly to Garage to a perfection.
However, the details of the main makeup of that room consisted namely of a
semi chillout room.. but the tunes that were being dropped meant
that you couldn't rest. You know what I mean???????. Everybody,
was moving at least. Even when leaning against the, wall or sitting
on the floor!!! There heads were nodding in perfect time with
the music.
<
After a short period within that room we moved onto the Main
room as its simply known. As soon as we reached it. Our eyes dropped.
I've never been in a room that had so many beautiful women in
it. And the diversity!!! (Sorry ladies, who might be reading this.
But
..!!!!)
Here everybody was ready and willing to party. Every where
I looked people were up for it. Even the girls that were dressed
to the "nines". Or should I say hardly dressed at all.!!!
At this present moment of time Yankee, was in
control at he decks, with the clubs Mc's in over drive. The "Sunday
Scene" had finally now reached Saturdays in London now. The
tunes were typical of that club scene. In fact looking at my flyer
that I had picked up off the floor I could see why. The list read
Yankee, Fen & Ramsey, Special K and DJ Milan!!!!
The crowd really exploded when 2 tunes were played back
to back; or one after the other of each other. "Got together"
( Grant Nelson) and "Saved my life" (Todd
Edwards ) were the crowd pleasers that did no harm!!!

By this time I had lost track of my friends who had either
disappeared to get some much need refreshment; or where checking
out the ladies. To be fair you couldn't miss them. They were all
around you. The ages surprised me as well. From 40 years old to
17 years old it seemed. So that made me feel all right!!!
As the night progressed we were greeted with more dub
infused basslines posing as Garage. The bass was full up, and
now there was no way of stopping it. Special K and Mike
"ruff" Lloyd who had made a special appearance
( I think that some hadn't turned up and he was asked ask
to replace him ) have a way of manipulating basslines
so well that it seemed to fit perfectly alongside the girly vocal
sample snatches that were present within most songs that they
played. Also I liked the selection of songs that they played to
their crowd. It was obvious that there ragga, reggae backgrounds
were more than playing a part of their mixing skills which was
excellent; and also hyped the crowd up perfectly.

However, there wasn't any trouble that I could say happen
on that night. And that's being honest. Maybe because there were
so many beautiful women there that night. I don't know.
Some revelers were taking things abit too far; and were
only restrained when they noticed that they were being watched.
And I don't mean, a little peck on the cheek either!!!
As the evening more onto its last legs, I was at one with the vubes, the music and the girlies.
How a sharp tapp on the shoulder brought me back to reality, as a whisper from my fellow travellor uttered "Its time Browny. Its time that we headed for
home" That I noticed that it was near 6am in the morning!!
The sad part of it was that I was really getting on well
with this blond girl. Maybe next time, I thought. Maybe next
time
.!!!!!
It meant our journey back to Ipswich, through the streets of London late at night.
It took us some time to get home that evening, because we were so full of enthusiam.
More travels to come to London with my pals.
Later on in the year. See ya!!
