Dj Roo, Hemel Hempstead - Official Interview

An Interview from
DJ ROO, Hemel Hempstead, England...

Roo in Control?

Name: DJ Roo

Location: Hertfordshire - England

Age: 23

Where Born: Ontario - Canada

1.Its been a Long since the last Interview that we did; that was nearly 2 years ago..
What have been doing since that time?

I've been pretty busy, things have picked up quite a lot since then as far as my DJ-ing goes. I've been playing quite regulary for Garage City and I'm doing a monthly night at the Ministry Of Sound in the Space Bar, I've also managed to get myself a date in the main bar at the Ministry in January from 2-5am!! That's probably the best news I've had as I can do a nice long set which makes a change from the usual 1 or 2 hours I normally get.

I'm still playing for Trinity a lot and it's wicked as ever down there! I'm also going to be at Pure Silk (SW1) in December, basically I'm busier than I've ever been at the moment!

2.Within the last Interview you mentioned that the music of Hip hop had a huge effect on you into listening and becoming a Dj. Do you still follow the music? Do you buy Hip hop tunes anymore?

Yeah, most definitely! I haven't stopped listening to the new Tribe Called Quest album and Jurassic 5 are one of the best Hip Hip Groups to come out in a long time, I don't think I'll ever lose touch with the Hip Hop scene.

Decks!!

3. Djing seems to be your life. Have you thought about becoming a producer of late?

I've produced a couple of tracks but I wasn't 100% happy with them, basically I'm not going to put anything out in the shops until I'm confident in what I'm doing. I'm trying to do something that fuses the US sounds alongside the ruff UK beats and bass. I should hopefully have something finished for early next year though so watch this space!

4 As were on the subject of djing what sought of styles of House music are you playing today. There seems to be so many styles that you can play. I wonder if you could tell us..what styles are you dropping at the moment.?

I'm playing a mix of US and UK Garage, whatever I play it's got to have funk and soul, wherever I'm playing I'll always try and drop some vocals alongside the more dubby tracks. I like some of the 2-Step that's about but the majority of my sets are 4/4 based.

5.You have told us that your the first proper club that you played to that allowed you to gain vital Dj experience was Camden Palace, London. Are there clubs like that that are still around that will give new up and coming Dj's that chance to break onto the Dj circuit. Or has it become so cut throat that you really feel for the young and upcoming coming talent. What are your views here?

Basically there's only one way to do it, work your ass off!! I think people are still willing to give up and coming talent a go you've just got to prove to them that your 100% dedicated to what you do.

The way I do it is look at flyers with unknown names on and send them your tapes, at the end of the day there's not much point in sending your tapes to "superclubs" like Cream and Gatecrasher because they really only book the big names, build yourself a base, do as many small clubs as you can,get a name for yourself and then start on the bigger clubs, saying that there is still a certain amount of luck involved as well but if you really believe in what your doing then you'll get there in the end, sounds corny but it's true.

6.Where do you play nowadays. Are you a resident at all?

Trinity at the Chunnel Club,London Liberty at the Colosseum,London One Night Stand at the Gass,London Garage City at Bar Rhumba,London Hot Bubblegum (various),London Indeep at the Ministry Of Sound,London Reline at the Ministry Of Sound,London Peach at Camden Palace,London Pure Silk at SW1,London The Vinyl Rooms, (Suffolk)

Roo in Control?

7.The last time I asked this... "Have you travelled abroad to work." You mentioned Tenerife. Has this changed? Have you been to more places since this last Interview? Was it a success?

Well, I was meant to be playing out in Ibiza this year for Trinity but it never happened, my flight got messed up and I couldn't get out there! I was pretty pissed off but there's always next year. I'm hoping to get out to Washington as well next year to play at 95 North's club Red.

8. What is your favourite place to Dj in. And secondly, to party or club in? Gives us your reasons

Well as far as my favourite place to play it's gotta be Trinity at the Chunnel Club, the atmosphere there is always wicked and I've never had a bad night yet, the Ministry's always good as well and Garage City is still THE club in England for proper US Garage vibes. My favourite club to party in is definitely "That's How It Is" at Bar Rhumba, it's run by Gilles Peterson and it's the most unique night in London, you never know what to except there and it's nice to get a break from Garage music now and again.

9 From a Dj point of view. Has Dj gotten to serious? Yes we all know that you and many other Dj's around the world get paid for what they do, but has it so that Money is killing the very nature of Djship? Reports of Dj's not turning up because the money wasn't right are rife....Do you think that Dj's have to much power?

Hmm, I don't know really, for me it's never been about the money but obviously you gotta get paid, how else can you carry on buying the records! At the end of the day there's some greedy people out there but I think they are mainly on the House scene, I won't name anyone in particular but I think a few of the House DJ's lost the passion for the music a long time ago and are only doing it for one thing, the money!

Just for the love of it?

10.More and more Girls Dj's are Djing within the Soulful House world then ever before.....Do you think that promoters are finally seeing them less then noverty acts and as bonifide dj's in their own rights?

Yeah, a DJ's a DJ whether they're male or female, but I don't agree with promoters booking female DJ's just because they're good looking, which I have seen happen before, one in particular was terrible, she couldn't mix a cake but she looked like a model so I guess that's how she got the gig.

11. THe Question of Uk Underground House has now become a Old CHESTNUT. As a player of both 2step and Speed Garage (as the Uk music press have labelled it) and Us Soulful House and Garage what are you views on this subject that refuses to go away.....

It has bought heated arguments in the past (*More so in Global House- the world famous e-mail forum!!), and may more than likely do so in the future...What are you views on this if you have any other....

Music is music, it's either good or bad, I play what I like at the end of the day, there's good 2-Step and there's shit 2-Step, same with any style of music, I can't stand all these labels though, it does my head in, but you've got the media to blame for that really, people generally feel more comfortable with something they can label.

New York..London who cares?

12.I mentioned this within the last Interview.."If given the chance who would you like to work with in the world of Garage or Deep House music?...You mentioned Grant Nelson, Todd Edwards, Jazz and Groove as well as Mousse T if you can remember.... Does this still hold true...?

Yep, but there's the new boy on the block, MJ Cole!! He's up there with the best of them, he's taken Todd Edward's style and made it his own, a very talented man! I'm also into a lot of the M-Dubs stuff and 95 North are going from strength to strength lately with a real open minded approach to there music, anyone that's doing something a bit different gets my attention really.

13. Its seems as if House is getting bigger and bigger in Europe every year.Is House now seen as the replacement to Hard House within Europe do you think..?

In London Garage has taken over BIGTIME!! It's definitely wiped out a lot of the Hard House clubs but I think there's room for everyone. As far as Europe goes I'm not really sure, it was definitely massive in Ibiza this year with all the big Garage promoters like Garage City and Twice As Nice going out there, it also seems to be slowly moving it's way up north with Garage nights in places like Birmingham and Coventry, but London is still the centre of it all, I think the further North you go the harder and faster they like the music.

People are listening to Garage in a big way in the Uk!

14. Have you played outside of London in recent times and if so is there a difference....In what you can play and what you can't......

I play at the Vinyl Rooms in Suffolk and they're definitely into the UK Garage sound, you can't go too deep with them but you can get away with a 2 hour set of UK Garage as long as you mix it up with some well known tunes.

15. We had a conversation about a year. I can remember you saying then that Giles Peterson is idol of yours...Do you listen to him on Radio One nowadays.....

Yep, when I get the chance to, he is the most open minded, forward thinking DJ in the world in my opinion and he's even dropping a but of MJ Cole in his set now as well. His only problem is he can't mix, but when he's playing music like that it doesn't really matter, anyway you try mixing Drum & Bass into Jazz into UK Garage and see how you get on.

16. As were talking about Radio, has the radio set-up within improved since the last Interview that we have done....??? Are you okay with Pirate set-up in London. Or are you getting a bit tired of them...What you like to see happen on Radio of you were in charge of Broadcasting of Dance music stance...?

Kiss daytime is still well commercial but there's some decent shows in the evening like Tuff Jam and Paul "Trouble" Anderson. The pirates can get a bit boring because they'll play the same style all day and night, Freek FM can be good and so can London Underground but I think there's too many pirates playing UK Garage, we need a bit of variety.

The pirates once again

17. You were right on the button when you mentioned that RIP Productions were going to be huge..and your were right once again when you said that the London Underground Sound was going to knock people sideways in 1997...Would you like to make it 3 out of 3 and predict what will happen this time around...?

SOUL, I think the music will become more and more soulful, it's finally broken away from that ruff abrasive Ragga sound and people are thinking about what they're doing again. What I'd like to see is the US and UK Garage scenes coming together, more and more people are incorporating vocals into UK Garage and using elements from Jazz, Funk and Soul music, hopefully this will carry on and the music will progress even more. DJ's like Tuff Jam are definitely making an effort to mix it up a bit, hopefully everyone else will follow.

One of Roo's Predictions that came true!!!

18.Is there a label at the moment that you always look out for when your record hunting...One that you will always keep an eye out for...

Public Demand, Soulfuric and Azuli to name three, they always put out consistently good music.

19. As where on the subject of Record hunting what is the shop that you like to visit to get that exclusive tune....Do you have one shop that you go to for Uk Underground stuff, one for Deep House, another for Us House...where do you go...

Uptown Records in Soho, London sort out all my needs, they cover everything from Deep House to UK Garage and it's a really friendly chilled out atmosphere there as well. Also Freedom Records in Watford, this is my main supplier of tunes if I'm not in town.

20. When you are djing Soulful House, or Uk Underground Garage do you go for a technique that allows you "Blend" rather than jump out of one track then into another and back again; or do you prefer to scratch even...What styles do you use when you playing to a crowd...??

It depends on what I'm playing, if it's UK then I might cut it up a bit but for US Garage it's gotta be a smoooooth blend.

Blender or Cut and Paste?

21. Is there one tune that seems to get you out of trouble so to speak where try as you might you can't get a reaction from the floor until this record is played...What is that track that you use to get some movement on the dance floor.....

"Together" by Grant Nelson will rock any dancefloor in a desperate situation as will "Relax" by Deetah, these are my life saver tunes!

Roo in Control?

22. Have you ever played on Radio before....And if not is this something your looking to do in the future...?

Nope, I'm not too bothered about it really, if I get an offer then I'll do it but it's not something I'm desperate to do at the moment, I prefer to play to a crowd.

23. Have you ever thought of teaming up and working that way to secure more Djing work..... Not really, I prefer to do a set on my own, that way I can build it up and take it down as I please, but it's not something I'd completely rule out, I wouldn't mind doing a bit of 4 deck mixing.

24. Are there any up and coming Dj's that we should keep an eye open for.....

Jaydee from Trinity, London is still playing wicked sets down the Chunnel Club, London apart from that I don't really get much of a chance to see other DJ's.

I get a lot of tapes from a couple of friends called Simon Haggis and Andy Crowther, they play a mix of Deep House and Eclectic grooves, they'll be starting there own night soon called Whistle Bump so look out for them!!

25. Lastly, have you got any advice to offer any aspiring Dj that wants to at least get on the Dj Circuit so to speak....

Keep on making tapes and send them out regulary, get to know promoters and visit the clubs you'd like to play, don't copy what everyone else does and develop your own style, persistence is the only way!

Thanks Roo!!!
