Release the Pressure - London, England 1996
"Carl's Garage and House Website"
Release the Pressure -1996, London, England
On the 16th March, 1996, I ventured onto the capital (London) on the chance of actually going to a club that is often overlooked when it comes to the playing of some of the deepest and yet funkiest Garage/House tunes on the club circuit on this side of the pond!
The club in question is known to us as Release the Pressure, at Great Windmill Street, London, W1, England.

We were lucky in the sense that I was given free tickets to the club from the Dj called Chris Corbett, from Newmarket, Suffolk, England ( Look at his interview and new club details that can be found within this site!)
On reaching the city from Ipswich,England we immediately noticed the difference; everywhere was buzying, hetic even and this was at 10:30pm at night! Even when we drove down streets in which there where no people there you could still feel the urgency about the place. There was something in the air tonight, but I COULDN'T PUT A FINGER ON IT!
Eventually after driving down countless streets and drive ways, we reached our destination; however there was no parking spaces available around the area of the club. So we had to park some distance away.
On entering the club we were confronted by the usual body search for us Men, and payments for entrance to the club.
Stepping inside the club we were confronted by a half empty club that to be honest, took the wind out of our sails a bit. We came out here expecting the club to be thumping and fill to the brim, but.............
But thank heavens for small mercies, the music was good, dam good, plus their were some nice looking Girls there. All dressed to the nines...very nice!

The Dj that we had come to see and support in one and another was Chris Corbett who has now gained a spot at this club came over and greeted us accompainied by his girlfriend!
Chris was in high spirits and apologised for that fact that this club was usually heaving, but he stressed that we should not be that disappointed because the music was going to first class. How right he was, the music was surperb, ranging from soft vocal tracks to the fully fled heavy duty Jazz/Funk House numbers. You know what I mean.....
Looking around the club, it could be accurately stated that the club isn't the best around for decor design, in fact it is very simple in its design. A bar on one side, which the drinks I found to be very pricey. The dance floor, its self of the club is slightly lowered so that it is the focus of the whole club. When I eventually ventured on to the dance floor, I felt that I was inside a Goldfish bowl as such, with all the spectators eyes on me. On the other side of the dance floor it seemed as if all the Prettiest Girls had congregated there to be admired and looked upon!

This was quite near a semi stage area that was quite close to the Dj booth; which was in turn was protected via a flimsly piece of sheet plastic.
An area had been set aside upstairs within the club that allowed people who managed to get up there to over look the dance floor and maybe look down on the dance floor athletics that may take place from time within the club. Taking to a couple of punters, I found out that this was supposed to be the VIP AREA!
Chris was right, the music did get better as the night went on. It was a pity that we missed Chrissey set however because from the repartie from the other, earlier punters within the club they mentioned that he was quite good. At the moment the Dj that was rocking the joint was Chas Levin. To be fair I don't know that much about this DJ, but he really did put his tunes together well..... I just had to drop a few moves myself.....

Other Djs that played that night were Dean Savonne and Andy B who played stroming sets. Not your watered down variety, they played the real deal !
As the tunes thumped on into the night, the crowd thinned alarmingly which I couldn't understand. I racked my brain into trying to understand why such a club like this was suffering in such a way. Then it dawned on me.
The fight The Bruno V Tyson fight! Ah, now I know why so many peope hadn't turned up for it this evening at the club tonight. Eventually after we had said our good byes to Chris and his Girlfriend we left at about 3pm, as te crowd had thinned down to 40 people. Outside, still not wanting to to go home we basically walked around the Blackmarket records of the Soho area of London which we witnessed sights that I thought had long since passed in England.
The fight between "Our" Frank Burno and Mike Tyson had attracted so much interest that people were now queueing 3 deep, and were paying up to £50:00p per person to unlicensed satelite bars owners, in the chance of gaining entrance to their bars! Bars owners weren't he only ones that were engaged in this- small restaurants, little eating places, etc had wittingly hired SKY satellite T.V and appliances and decided to beat the law by staying open until to 5pm in the morning in order fro the party owls to view after the clubs had finnished.
Paying £50:00p was too much for us, so it was decided to venture onto the club called Garage City, in Shaftsbury Avenue, London, England
Even before we had stepped into the place we were told that the club was only half full because of the FIGHT!
Well that was it for our night out in London; and at Release the Pressure. We should we doing it again shortly, so keep an eye on this space!
