Kisstalk2 - March - 1999

More Kiss Related Comments for you..

The Kiss 100 fm, London, England debate raised quite few eyebrows
when it was first shown on the Web Site
on the 10th February, 1999.

Here below are just a few more replies to the report that was written...

No not over the top
I dont necessarily agree with your sentiments about Kiss tho !
I think it remains a very fine radio station - and does do a good job still in playing popular dance music.

You have to face facts, and Kiss FM is now a big business...

They wouldnt survive playing 'upfront' and obscure Black music 24/7

Now i am a US garage DJ ! and i listen to Kiss FM when im out and about during the day,
cause its nice to have some light relief from the shit that I listen to at home and play!

If im driving along in London (and believe me Carl, driving in London is STRESSFULL)

I'd rather be listening to MOR dance music, than heavy upfront garage/house or jungle.

There's a time and a place for all kinds of music...
Keep the upfront stuff in the clubs and on the pirates - Kiss is doing fine!

hi, there.

Thanks for your e-mail. We have already check out your websites.

We think that the report about Kiss FM is EXCELLENT!
It's the first time that someone talk about this radio in that way.

Dj's who came to Argentina give the oposite opinion.

The ref. says that it is one of the best radios in the world, people as
Sasha, Colin Dale, Darren Price, Neil Landstrumm, etc...

We think it's GREAT (and rare too) that someone could write as you did, about the radio.

Carl, Hi

Ummm.....i still disagree with you!

Kiss Fm, as any commercial radio station has to raise revenue...
mostly through selling advertising space, agreed?

On this basis, the more listeners they get,
the higher price they can command for their ads? agreed?

So...prime time - in radio land thats the daytime? ok?

Move the station output towards the centre = more listeners ! - agreed?

Therefore - Kiss becomes financially better off and more in a position to support/promote dance music

I dont know if you can tune to kiss in your part of the world?
But here in London I can...

I think they have struck a fair balance between the needs of their financial backers
and the people of London who appreciate dance music.

Kiss is a big station now, and I guess over the past few years,
their success has inevitably brought compromise between all the interested parties.

I guess the same could be said about many clubs, record labels, shops etc...
They have all become commercialised

Take the Ministry Of Sound for example...
Now i can remember when that place first opened.

Excellent concept...like Zanzibar brought to the Elephant and Castle, London.

I mean a garage heads dream (huge US sound system with 3 decks and a urei mixer) .......

But look at those f*&"!6 now, promoting every kind of dance music, commercial cds in every record shop, sponsoring politicians etc etc etc

I could go on about the commercialisation to dance music for ever Carl....

Its very sad when i think about the roots and the good times we had many years ago.. but its the way of the world sadly.

I've seen so many sad thing happen to dance music in the last decade...so nowadays i find it difficult to feel passionate about the commercialisation of dance music. Money talks - end of story !

Still I am a total underground "real" garage head, and get the ultimate high on the smell of freshly unwrapped US import 12"s every Wednesday afternoon ! and I'm fortunate that I am still able to create, craft and enjoy deep underground mixes in my private studio !

My ideal radio station, wouldn't be Kiss FM at all (even if it was like it used to be)
- it would consist of back to back garage and disco music, it would broadcast 24 hours a day and only have three DJs (Tony Humphries, Todd Terry and Roger Sanchez), they could do it in 4 hour shifts ! and kip on the studio floor !

I glad that you got this as you are most on of the people who has a vested interest in this sort of thing. I think that your comments are correct that you are given here.... Kiss was built on a Soul and Hiphop base. Nothing further from the truth. Kiss was Englands finest Dance station. The list of dj's that has played over the years for the station plus Digweed and Sasha, confirm this. I hope that one day people who are in charge of radio stations that about their communites a lot more instead of the dollar.... Radio should be for the people, and not neccessarly for the Accountants...!!!
