Garage City and the Gass Club Visit -January, 1988
After their set, Chrissy T reached for the microphone and asked us ( the punters ) to give them a good welcome; to which the crowd responded immediately.
![]() Rude Boy Rupert took the reins now, and kept the pace flowing. Tension's "Can you feel it" was one of the tunes that turned my head. However, it was now 2.30am and still no sign of Muema, or Sonia. Ah well, I thought, you've done everything that you could have? It was down to them, if they were going to bother to turn up. It was during the set of Bobbi and Steve, who were really letting loose and had the crowd bubbling, I felt someone patting me on the shoulder. At first I though it was some enthusiastic dancer who was "going for it" in this shoebox of a place. But after the third "tap" on the shoulder, I had to turn around just to see who it was. Yes. You've guessed it Sonia and Muema. I couldn't believe it at first. I looked down at my watch, which read 3.20am.

"You left it a bit late. I smiled at Sonia.
"Where's Muema? Muema, surprised me. He was tall. Around 6ft 3ins in height, and quite well built. We tried to shake hands, etc. But the crowds there nearly made this impossible. I did get a "Nice to meet you" from him though. At this moment in time any inhibitions that were first shown by a few shy people within the club had long since gone. A nice vibe had been built up. People were smiling, jumping up and down and generally letting their hair down. You've got the picture, right?
![]() Digital Camera in hand I asked to take pictures of Muema , Sonia , Natasha and their Cousin who had also paid a visit to this club, but got told a firm no thanks! However, I still managed to sneak off one shot of them talking together while they were not paying attention to me. (As you can see!!)
![]() It was around 4-am time that Sonia stressed that she was leaving. I was a bit shocked because Bobbi and Steve were rocking!!! I looked at her in disbelief, but I could see that she wanted to go. She wanted to try the club called the Gas Club, or Sun City. That's her vibe. Cheekily I asked if I could squeeze in? as I wanted to see what the Gass Club or Sun City had to offer as well on a Saturday Night. She agreed. I looked around to say bye to the others. But could I find them? The phrase "Needle in a Haystack", came to mind at this very moment in time. Even Rusty, who seemed to be very close by me all evening was nowhere to be seen
![]() Within 5 minutes we had left the club and making our way through 1 or 2 back streets to get to Sonia's Car. Driving through to the West End area of London, we got in conversation about Muema's flying visit to the City. What did he think of the clubs that he had been to? Or ha he been tuning into Kiss 100 fm flew about in Muema's direction. Sonia didn't escape either. I grilled her about the time that she took to get into Garage City. She took it in good heart. We were all in good spirits that night!!!! After a few twists and turns, and squeezing into an impossible parking space just off the Leicester Square area of London, we decided to try either theKoo Club, or the Gass Club. TheGass Club won the day in the end. (I don't know how Sonia does it, but she was determined to park there!!!!) As soon as we parted with our monies at the paying booth, and entered the club you could notice the change of pace. My first sight was of a Bongo drummer who was going hell for leather trying to keep in time with the music. The MC was also finding it difficult to keep up with the whole proceedings. He kept drinking huge gulps of water; or was it beer?
![]() It was a young sort of crowd, but not so young that you felt uncomfortable. The makeup of the punters were again from a mixed variety. From the fashionable West London, South London types to the out of towners like me. For some reason you can always tell them apart. I don't know why? This club would not win any prizes for its décor that's for sure. For instance part of the club was painted white, whilst the other parts of it as my eyes zoomed around the building were painted a yucky yellow. There was also a big banner strewn across the DJ booth, and down across to one beam which read "Last Night Stand".
![]() We had just missed, via looking at the flyer that I had received on entering the club, Matt "jam" Lamont. I cursed a little here. because I wanted to hear him again. He's great when he's on song. But as the MC informed us, the present DJ, Mr. Scribbs who was on the decks, was "doing it". And he wasn't wrong either. He got one huge roar as he dropped "My Desire" the Ramsey and Fen mix!!! (Yes the one that Blaze, from the USA wrote!!!) Everybody was moving to this one, even the bar staff. I got a huge surprise when a girl that comes from the same part of the world as myself tapped me on the shoulder to say hello (Stephanie..hi!!). She nearly knocked for six. The chances of this happening was at least 100 to 1. We both explained why and who she was with, and exchanged some small talk. Apparently, she was up with a birthday party from Ipswich, and decided at the last moment that they would spend this evening in London. The Gass club always was a favourite haunt of theirs so why not?. I explained why I had decided to come to London that evening and pointed to the people who were with me. Sonia, and the rest of my party had already made it onto the dance floor, and were letting themselves go. As was everybody in the club to tell you the truth. Stephanie, the girl from Ipswich who had "caught me" so to speak (Or I had caught her!!!), also had decided to move on and catch up with her friends. But that was before I decided to ask her for a picture. She declined. Eventually I persuaded her to allow me to take one picture of her and her friend (Jane, also from Ipswich), but would you believe it. The camera run out of space for more pictures to be taken.!!! Moving on from that embarrassing episode, I decided to put the camera away and dance the rest of the night away with the others. We had got there late, as you could see that most of the Gass Crowd had already gone. But there were still enough people give it a good atmosphere.
![]() Most of the night's tracks were geared towards Speed Garage. Though every once and a while a jungle classic was thrown for good measure which I my opinion spoilt it. You could see that Muema and Sonia were enjoying this.. more then anybody. They were even dancing against each other!!!!
![]() Tracks like "Bad boys move in silence", "Catch a Feeling" and "Gets better with time" had the DJ being cheered more and more!!! "Charlie Brown", on the decks from London town" , the MC ranted was another DJ to take the reins and he kept the pace flowing. No letup here. Even I had to say "I Surrender", for a few moments as the pace was electric, but so damn funky!!! The Girls I kept noticing were well dressed. Some of them dressed similar to Foxy Brown. You know that score don't you? At around 5 15 am we decided that enough was enough, and left the club to what seemed like utter silence outside, in comparison to the noise and fury of the Gass Club. However, before we stepped free from the vicinity of the club area, the flyer posse got us. I counted in the safety of the Sonia's car that I received 13 flyers at least for next week's events, plus one Club Pack!!!! A short journey back to Sonia's car, and even more twisting and turning to get out of the tight parking space that we had found ourselves in, saw us heading towards a particular bagel shop in South London. in the early hours of the morning. There we talked and eat the rest of the night away. What a night!!!
