"Carl's Garage and House Website"

24th March, 1996 - Danella Montana at Hollywoods nightclub, Ipswich, England - The Official Report

Hollywoods
24th March, 1996
Danella Montana

On the 24th of March, 1996 saw me venture onto those old boards again Hollywoods nightclub, Ipswich, Suffolk, England. I got there with a party of three rather late in the day I must say after one of them got held up by a relative who arrived at the house rather late!

However all was not lost as new name and a new sight was there to greet me. This was in the shape of a new dj called Danella Montana, from London, England.
I found out that Danella has been djing from the age of 16 years of age working with a number of people within the industry from working with Norman Jay to Rappattack.

However on reaching Hollywoods we were told that we had only just missed Gem da la Vibe set that was good.

But on reaching there, there was Danelle at the decks swithching from her box to the decks in quick consession in order to keep the vibe momentum going. I sneeked up to the dj booth again, before anybody could get hold of what I was upto. I greeted her in between what she was doing and asked her if she had the track called"Jazz Powa by Black n' Spanish She said she had the track but didn't want to play it because she feared that she would lose her crowd!

I decided to stay close to her by staying within the area of the dj booth. It was here that I witnessed the change witinin the crowd. I noticed that the crowd had increased ( I especially noticed that there was a large number of Girls that had now congregated within the Garage Hut area !) within the Garage Hut area of the club, and the clubbers were beginning to let their innibitions go.

Noticing this change I noticed this Danella began pulling out white labels and USA promotional 12 inch tracks left ,right and center to prove that this was the time to show us what see was made off.

Tunes like "For the Love of you", by Alex & Rae "Shout n' Out" by Lood feat Donell Rush and Catacombs by Krimp, plus numerous of other white labels.

Within the next hour the area was now thriving, including people that are in the know now asking me who was this dj? and where was She from Manchester, Birmingham or Liverpool - England

The tunes got harder as her time for her to hard over the controls to Chris Corbett came nearer. By the end she over an her time by being over enthusiatic about what she was doing to the crowd. By the time she had finally decided to leave her set the stage was perfectly set up for dj Chris Corbett to continue the act.

He responded positively with his first track on the decks being a dub mix of the single called "Mighty Power of Love" by Lee John on Freetown records, Uk. This was a nice curtain opener, which introduce him perfectly to the whippied up crowd that was still increasing. He then decided to go onto a soulful house jounery by first introducing the crowd to "Justify" by M&S on Strictly Rhythm records. A haunting track that has now become a house classic within Hollywoods, Ipswich, England and around the the Uk!

From then on he continued on a path of Soulful House numbers which held the girls attention more than the boys. Who had taken now charge of the dance floor, which saw the lads on the edge eyeing them up! This period lasted for about 20 to 30 minutes which saw me to and frow the bar and the dj booth.

After gaining the respect from the girls, chris decided that it was time to play more dub tunes orDARK GARAGE as it is refered to over here (UK). He first track that he palyed that is now regarded as a classic world wide in the world of Garage/House was the single called "Closer" by Mood 2 Swing feat Carol Sylvin - Dub Mixes. This was met with whistles and immediate cheers of appreciation by everybody and everyone. That Bassline! It was a good choice because all the movers and shakers had decided it was now cool to let loose!

The next record brought absolute bedlem on the dance floor! "When somebody Loves You !" by Daphne on Maxi records, Usa Had people that are normally reserved in coming to the dance floor, onto it. Girlfriends in hand, accomplished dancers, groups of lads were now, all doing their thing as the jazz/dub vide had reached everybodies soul. Even a circle had now formed around the two best dancers in the club as they went about performing incredible dance moves to the amazement of everybody. No, not like Saturday Night Fever - even Better!

It was now dub time, and the policy was working. Word had got around the the Garage Hut was cooking! I took time off by gaining a prize sitting area near the dj booth in order to have look at what he was flinging down onto the decks and also too get near to this delicious looking girl that was also in the vicinity.

People from all ages kept coming up to the dj to congratulate him on what he was playing, or asking him what was his name......

For about a 30 minute period, it was a case of tune after tune that continually rocked the place. In fact within every corner that I looked now I saw that everybody was now dancing..................

To be perfectly honest I noticed that I hadn't even been to the other parts of the club that night. The tunes, the girls and my few bottles of the drink called MULE by the Smirnoff company (Ginger Beer mixed with VODKA) had me magnetised, so I saw no reason in moving from this area.

Having to play Soccer the next day for a local semi professional team, I decided to leave the Hollywoods nightclub, Ipswich, England, this time at around 2:00pm that night ( it finished at 3:00pm!).

I left without even a phone number, or even a girl on my arm. Sad that isn't it.? But thinking about it, that wasn't quite true because I was able to get Danelles contact number in order to ask her for an interview for these pages! Anyway keep your eyes peeled on this section for next edition of this website....

See ya!
